Kamau is creating a new generation of stem medicines with the potential to provide lasting benefit from a single intervention.
Disease can shape a life forever
Many medicines provide benefit through ongoing treatment. Kamau is developing stem medicines designed for durability. By engineering long-lived stem cells, we aim to make a precise therapeutic change once, with the potential to carry forward for a lifetime.
Our vision is a future where one intervention creates lasting benefit. Where medicine restores possibility. Where disease becomes something a person overcame.
Our story
A scientific idea carried forward
Kamau grew from research at Stanford University, where physician-scientists Matthew Porteus, M.D., Ph.D., and Maria Grazia Roncarolo, M.D., advanced homology-directed repair in human hematopoietic stem cells. Their work helped establish the potential to make precise therapeutic changes in long-lived cells that continually renew blood and immune lineages.
In 2023, Valentin (Vali) Barsan, M.D., co-founded Kamau with Drs. Porteus and Roncarolo to turn that foundation into a reproducible, clinical-scale platform. Since then, the company has built around the full path from precise editing and process development through manufacturing and clinical translation.
nula-cel is the first clinical expression of that platform, applying precise gene correction to the sickle cell disease-causing HBB mutation in the Phase 1/2 RESTORE trial. The same core capabilities now support programs across hematology, oncology, and neurology.
Bringing this work forward has taken years of perseverance from our team, trust from patients and families, and commitment from clinical investigators. That shared resolve continues to shape Kamau and the medicines we are building.
The name Kamau brings together three ideas that express our commitment to scientific rigor, human purpose, and medicines designed to endure.
Quiet courage
Honoring the strength of patients, families, advocates, and caregivers in the sickle cell disease community.
Persistent effort
Reflecting the engineering discipline required to translate complex biology into precise, reproducible medicines.
Deep care
Grounding our work in listening, learning, and partnership with the people we serve.
Our people
Creating lasting change together
Kamau brings together leaders in genome engineering, stem cell biology, clinical care, process engineering, manufacturing, and data science. We build from first principles, design for clinical scale, and learn continuously across research, development, and manufacturing.
Together, we translate biological precision into medicines with the potential to change the course of a life.
